Using Harwood Floors in the Kitchen

10/20/2023

Hardwood flooring has been the most coveted flooring option around the world for generations because of its many advantages. However, we are often hesitant to use hardwood floors in the kitchen. This is primarily because of the common perception that hardwood is extremely susceptible to damage caused by water and moisture. Many of the activities that take place in a kitchen can indeed cause damage to wood. However, surprisingly enough, hardwood can work exceptionally well in kitchens, provided they are properly maintained.

Whether hardwood flooring is the right choice for you or not will depend on several factors including your lifestyle habits and preferences. Kitchens are one of the most trafficked areas in any house and are exposed to dirt, spills, humidity, high temperatures, and everyday wear. Constant splashing from the sink, unnoticed water spillage, and leaking dishwashers can cause serious problems for hardwood floors. Therefore, if you want to use this material in your kitchen, you will have to put in the hard yards to maintain your kitchen.

Benefits of Hardwood Kitchen Floors

There are many inherent traits of hardwood that all of us love. The biggest reason behind the popularity of hardwood floors is their beauty. Hardwood is capable of transforming any living space by providing it with a warm, stylish look. Moreover, it is possible to create a desired ambiance by customising the wood types and finish colours.

Durability is another important benefit of hardwood flooring. When proper care is taken, hardwood floors can retain their quality for well over 30 years. Though surface damage may take place, it can be refinished without a lot of hassle. If the damage is detected before it goes too deep, you can make it look new once again by sanding and refinishing it. However, it is worth remembering that all types of hardwood aren’t suitable for kitchen floors. Some varieties may be too soft to deal with heavy objects falling on them. The most appropriate hardwood varieties for kitchens are the ones with a high Janka hardness scale ranking.

Unlike many other flooring options that trap pollen, dust, or other allergens, hardwood is hypoallergenic and can improve the air quality of your kitchen. This can be a great reason to opt for hardwood, particularly for babies, asthmatics, allergy sufferers, and individuals with weak immune systems.

Compared to stone or ceramic tiles, hardwood floors are easier and warmer on the feet. Tiles feel comfortable during the summer but become unbearable in winter. On the other hand, hardwood floors remain comfortable all over the year. As we spend a lot of time standing in the kitchen, comfort is certainly an important consideration.

Some Challenges

As mentioned earlier, some challenges must be addressed for using hardwood as your kitchen flooring material.

First and foremost, hardwood is prone to water damage, dents, and scratches, particularly when used in kitchens. If liquid spills are not cleaned immediately, it may lead to ugly stains. Over some time, this can cause issues such as cupping, crowing, or warping. Also, compared to most other flooring materials, hardwoods are quite expensive. Therefore, if you are on a budget, this may not be the best option for your kitchen. Finally, using hardwood in the kitchen requires elaborate maintenance regularly.
