Water-Based (Hydronic) System: Electric UFH systems are easier to install and cheaper. However, they tend to stress timber floors by generating rapid and uneven heat. For French oak flooring, the best option is to use hydronic systems where warm water flows through pipes embedded in the floor. These systems reduce the risk of thermal stress on the wood by distributing heat in a more gradual and uniform manner. Also, for larger heating areas, hydronic systems are more energy-efficient.
Stable Subfloor Temperature: Temperature control is one of the most important considerations for combining UFH with timber. Please remember that the finished floor’s surface temperature should never exceed 27°C. Above this limit, there is a higher risk of drying out the wood, which may lead to cupping, shrinkage, or even cracking. This is why you may want to install a smart thermostat with floor sensors.
Acclimatise Your Flooring: Proper acclimatisation is essential before French oak boards are installed. It reduces the likelihood of post-installation movement by allowing the timber reach equilibrium with the room’s temperature and humidity.
Before installing French oak over UFH,
- Store them for 7-10 days in the room where they will be installed.
- During this period, the UFH system should be turned on and set to a low and stable temperature.
- Any drastic changes in humidity or temperature should be avoided.
Subfloor Preparation: As the foundation of the entire installation, your subfloor must be level, dry, and free from contaminants and debris. Subfloor moisture can have a devastating impact on timber. Use a hygrometer to measure the subfloor’s moisture content before installation.
- Less than 1.8% moisture content is recommended for cement-based screeds.
- For gypsum-based screeds, this percentage should be below 0.3%.
To achieve a flat and even surface, you may consider using self-levelling compounds.
Adhesives and Installation: Floating floors are generally not recommended while installing French oak over underfloor heating. The heat trapped within the air gap beneath floating installations can reduce the efficiency of your UFH system.
The gold standard for French oak installation over underfloor heating is a full surface glue-down installation. In this process, UFH-compatible adhesives are used for directly adhering the flooring to the subfloor. These flexible adhesives help prevent stress-related damage by accommodating minor movement in the wood as it expands and contracts with temperature changes.
