Installation of hardwood floors is one of the most sought after home upgrades for many homeowners. It can immediately enhance the sophistication, warmth, and long-term value of your home. However, if installation goes wrong, even the most beautiful timber can lose its appeal. Ignoring Acclimation
Being a natural material, hardwood tends to contract and expand with changes in humidity and temperature. Many homeowners make the error of installing hardwood straight out of the box. Boards installed without acclimation often leads to gapping, cupping, or warping.
This problem can be avoided by allowing the hardwood to breathe for at least 7–10 days in the room where it will be installed. The ideal environment for hardwood acclimation includes a temperature range of 18–24°C and relative humidity between 40–60%.
Skipping Subfloor Preparation
Please remember that a solid foundation plays an extremely important role in building a beautiful floor. This is why it is important to ensure that your subfloor is dry, level, and clean. If hardwood is installed on damp concrete or uneven surfaces, you may have to deal with issues such as cupping, squeaking, and even structural damage.
To prevent this problem, check both the subfloor and flooring material using a moisture meter. In case of concrete subfloor, it must be fully cured and have a moisture content of less that 4%. It is also important to install an underlayment or a moisture barrier appropriate for the floor type. Prevent small imperfections from becoming visible over time by leveling uneven surfaces before laying planks.
Wrong Installation Method
Different installation techniques are required for different hardwood products. If installation is incorrect, you may encounter problems such as hollow sounds, shifting boards, or gaps between planks.
This is why it is extremely important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations related to installation. For example, nailed or glued down installation is highly recommended for solid oak. On the other hand, floating systems work beautifully for engineered French oak flooring.
Not Accounting for Expansion Gaps
Woods tend to move over a period of time and need space for that. Therefore, it is essential to leave sufficient expansion space (usually 10–15mm) around walls and doorways. Without this gap, there can be buckling or lifting during humid months resulting from boards pressing against the walls.
This problem can be prevented by leaving consistent spacing around pipes, walls, and kitchen islands fixed points. To maintain accuracy, spacers can be used during installation.
Wrong DIY Finishing
Application of the sealant or final finish may appear simple, but blotches and streaks can be created by uneven sanding or coating. Therefore, homeowners without experience are advised to hire a professional to sand and finish the floor.
Improper Post-Installation Care
Don’t assume the job to be complete even when the installation is complete. Long-term beauty of hardwood floors requires immediate aftercare. Your floor finish can be damaged before it’s fully settled by using wet mops, dragging furniture, or skipping the first maintenance cleaning.
- Avoid heavy foot traffic or placing furniture for at least 48–72 hours.
- Felt pads should be used under all furniture legs.
- Only use pH-neutral wood cleaners for cleaning purpose.
- To minimise expansion and shrinkage, maintain indoor humidity using a humidifier/dehumidifier.
