Benefits of UV Oil Finishes for Hardwood Floors

08/19/2022

Out of many different types of hardwood finishes, UV oil finishes are highly preferred nowadays. These finishes create a beautiful sheen, enhance the natural beauty of the floor, and highlight the colour and texture of the floor. UV oil finishes for hardwood floors are also more durable and easier to maintain compared to most other alternatives.

What is UV Oil Finish?

UV oil finishing involves applying a special type of oil on the wood surface, allowing it to be soaked properly by the surface, and curing and hardening the wood using high capacity UV ray.  The oil forms a hard wearing layer by binding with wood.   The process of curing using natural oil takes a long time and the curing is not very hard. However, when high energy UV is used for curing, the process of curing becomes much faster and the wood surface achieves a high level of resistance to wear.

Benefits of UV Oil Finish

The popularity of UV oil wood floors is on the rise because of the benefits mentioned below.

Appearance: In many instances, appearance of the floors is the primary selection criteria for many property owners.  Individuals often opt for wooden floors because they appreciate the natural beauty and appearance of the material. However, unfortunately, many wood floor finishes tend to change the texture and colour of the floorboards over time. Choosing a UV oil finish is an excellent alternative to enjoy the natural beauty of the floor as well as the benefits of a protective finish. These finishes are designed to help enhance wood’s natural colour, natural pattern, and grain.

Surface Smoothness: The surfaces created by UV oil finishes are more comfortable and smoother compared to varnish and high gloss lacquer finishes. Generally, high gloss finishes create a glossy surface that is relatively cooler.  On the other hand, UV oil finishes are associated with a warmer surface that is more comfortable, particularly during the cold winter months. Unlike any other type of finish, oil finishes penetrate into the wood structure and crystallize within its fibres. This creates a transparent and smooth topcoat with a soft matte effect that can efficiently hide smaller imperfections.

Durability and Maintenance: As already mentioned, small imperfections such as dents and scratches are effectively camouflaged by UV oil finishes.  As a result, floors look like new for a longer period of time. Moreover, it is relatively easier to keep these floors clean. UV oil finish also has extraordinary protective power because of penetration of the oil into the wooden floorboard structure. While most other finishes only create a protective coating on the floor surface, UV oil ensures durability from within. Another advantage of this finish is that sanding is not required prior to refinishing.
