Simple Tips to Deal with Cloudy Hardwood Floors

04/24/2024

If you have hardwood flooring at home, you are blessed with timeless quality, extraordinary looks, and outstanding durability. However, as many of you must have experienced, preserving hardwood floors can be quite a challenge. The impression of your floor can be ruined by the appearance of a cloud-like surface. To fix this problem, the first step is to find out what causes hardwood floors to look hazy and cloudy.

Discussed below are some common factors that may lead to cloudy hardwood floors.

Moisture: This is one of the most common reasons behind the formation of clouded hardwood surfaces. While water can be used for cleaning hardwood floors, too much water can damage it and change its look. Avoid using sponge or string mops because they can’t absorb water effectively when they are soaked. Also, using a dehumidifier can be a good option for homes with high moisture levels.

Finish Application: The hazy appearance of your hardwood floor can also be attributed to improper application of finish. When a finish is applied on a wooden floor, sufficient drying time must be allowed before the next coat is applied. If this is not done, vapours trapped beneath the finish may turn the floor hazy.

Improper Cleaner: With so many options available around us, it is very easy to pick the wrong cleaning products. Avoid products such as furniture polish, paste wax, and oil soaps as they almost always tend to leave a hazy build-up on the floor.

Wax: Please be mindful of the fact that polyurethane-treated hardwood floors should never be waxed. The wax layer tends to stand on top of the polyurethane finish and creates a cloudy appearance.

Restoring Cloudy Hardwood Floor

Fixing the cloudy appearance of hardwood floors involves dissolving and removing the offending layer and using the right techniques for cleaning.

  • Ammonia is an excellent cleaner for scuff marks, black spots, and sticky stains on the floor. To clean haze buildup, dissolve one cup of ammonia solution in a gallon of water and rub the affected area gently. Don’t forget to remove ammonia residue by rinsing thoroughly. Finally, remove excess moisture by pat drying with a cloth.
  • Vinegar is another effective cleaner for hard surfaces. As a result of its mildly acidic nature, it can effectively eliminate hardened residues. Mix equal amounts of vinegar and water, and remove hazy buildup using this solution and a damp cloth. Rinse with another water-dampened cloth and dry the floor immediately.

Prevention Tips

A cloudy and milky appearance is an indication that the finish on your floor has been damaged. The best way to prevent this damage is to ensure thorough regular maintenance. This would mean getting rid of all particles off the floor surface by damp cleaning and dust mopping. While damp cleaning the floor, be sure to use PH-neutral cleaners that are tough on stains, but gentle on the hardwood floors.  To avoid too much moisture, a fine spray mist can be used for cleaning sections of the floor.
