Wood Floor Cleaning Tips during Coronavirus

07/14/2020

The human civilisation is currently going through one of the worst ever health emergencies. As the number of infected persons continues to rise, efforts are on around the world to come up with a vaccine. However, until that becomes a reality, it is important for us to follow several preventive measures recommended by the experts.

Almost all of us know by now that coronavirus spreads when a person comes in contact with an infected person.  However, you may not be aware of the fact that this virus can live for several days on different surfaces.  Naturally, this is a big concern for all of us. If you have wooden floor in your house, you must take adequate measures to ensure that the floor is clean and virus-free.

In this regards, it is important to note that the lifespan of coronavirus varies from surface to surface. Therefore, before discussing the wood floor cleaning tips, it is important to understand the lifespan of the virus on the wood flooring and some other relevant points.

  • Some of the recent studies suggest that coronavirus can survive for two to four days on a wooden surface. Therefore, these floors must always be kept clean and sanitized.
  • Coronavirus has a lifespan of five to seven days on laminate wood flooring. Moreover, this type of wooden surface is not ideally suited for preventing bacterial growth. Therefore, take extra care if you have laminated wood flooring at your home.
  • Multiple researches have shown that it is possible to get affected by COVID-19 from the shoe soles. Therefore, try to keep your shoes out and sanitize them each time you are coming from outside.

Cleaning or Disinfecting?

Please note that there is a lot of difference between just cleaning and disinfecting. Cleaning lowers the risk of spreading by reducing the number of germs. On the other, disinfecting kills the germs on surfaces using certain chemicals. Luckily, when it comes to flooring, complete disinfection of the surface is rarely required. Several studies indicate that floor disinfection does not have much impact beyond regular cleaning.

Cleaning Tips for Hard Flooring:

Just like you normally do, keep your hard surface floors clean on a daily basis with the help of a microfiber mop. To clean up a higher amount of dirt, dust, and debris, vacuum with a soft-bristled floor brush attachment can be used. If you have hardwood or laminate floors, opt for damp mopping because moisture can damage these floors. The best way to clean vinyl floorings is to use a solution of warm water and apple cider vinegar.

Disinfecting Hard Flooring:

Prior to disinfecting, always ensure that floor has been cleaned thoroughly. While choosing the disinfecting product, be sure that the product is suitable for wooden floor. Also, try to figure out how long it should be kept in contact with the surface to kill germs. In case of hardwood floors, the best option is to use a damp mop along with disinfectants that are created specifically for hardwood.
